Each piece comes out perfectly cooked, with a golden, crisp batter that hugs the tender fish beneath. The use of groundnut oil makes a noticeable difference in flavor, creating a unique taste that keeps me coming back.
Another highlight is the friendly service. Staff members greet diners with genuine smiles and create a warm ambiance that feels like home. Customers often mention the personal touch in service, making it hard not to feel welcomed and valued.
The variety in the menu is also impressive. Beyond their renowned fish and chips, they offer hearty chicken options and delightful sides like homemade mushy peas and curry sauce. It's clear that everything is prepared with care and attention, ensuring a memorable dining experience.
While Mary's Supreme Fish Bar is generally praised, a few areas could use improvement. For some, the limited seating can be a drawback, as the cozy interior accommodates only a few diners. During peak times, it can feel a bit cramped, leading to longer wait times for those wishing to dine in.
Some customers have noted small mishaps with orders, such as incorrect fish types or sizes. While staff are always friendly and quick to rectify any mistakes, ensuring careful attention to detail would enhance the overall experience. Additionally, for those who aren't familiar with the business hours, it can be challenging as no late-night options are available beyond the usual operating hours.
"There's something about Mary" is what comes to mind when you first walk in. She says "Hello darling" like she's known you for your entire life, she's smiling ear to ear, ready to spoil you like your favorite aunt. I know you're reading this to find out how good the food is, and I'll tell you it's the best fish and chips I've had my entire trip to London, but the main reason I'd come back here is the vibe and soul of the place. Highly, highly recommend!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This was hands down the best fish and chips I’ve ever had! The fish was incredibly fresh, the chips were perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and the use of peanut oil added a unique, delicious flavor. The chef was impressively fast and clearly passionate about their craft. Everyone was polite and friendly, making the whole experience even better. I’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommended!
We stopped here for a mid-week meal. It was our first time and we were very impressed with the exceptionally friendly and generous service, and tasty fish and chips. We noticed a board of thank you notes dating back to 1992 - so you know it’s an established chippy (a fish institution) of the area. We ate inside. There is only enough seating for 2-3 people. The fish was cooked to order and they picked out especially large ones for us which was nice. They said if we called ahead the fish can be cooked ready for your arrival. My my this was definitely one of the best fish and chips we have had, and best in London! The size of the fish was incredible, and it was so fresh. Comes with the skin on which I personally like and the peri salt they have for the chips is so good. Mushy peas (homemade) and curry sauce excellent too!
Partner was craving fish and chips however we had always been disappointed with the chip shops close to us. So I decide to look farther afield and came across Mary’s. I ordered ahead as advised by other patrons here and turned up to collect my fish and chips. The decor was very clean, quirky as if it had been recently renovated. The oil looked fresh and there was a minimal smell of salt and vinegar but no heavy grease in the air. This isn’t your tired chip shops close with grease coating the wall. The fish and savaloys proudly displayed themselves in the plexiglass window and the staff looked ready to help Upon arriving they knew my order as soon as I arrived. Unfortunately the fish ordered was wrong (incorrect fish and wrong sizes) but it was an honest mistake and the food looked so appealing I didn’t mind. The staff were super friendly and apologetic and generally just good vibes people so just want an issue. After wrapping the fish the traditional way vs bulky wasteful carbon boxes that take up half your recycling bin I looked forwards to the drive home, hoping my fish would survive the trip and not go soggy. The fish looked great. The pics do not do the food justice unfortunately. I had also cut a 1/3 of the large cod before taking a picture. It was really big. And delicious. It wasn’t oily or too hard or soggy. It was a brilliant piece of fish. I had wanted haddock but got cod and it was honestly the best cod fish I’d ever had. The skate was very good and served in a chunk rather than some places that cook the entire fish flat. It’s not my fave but I hear it was very good and the fish so moist. I love that they keep the skin on as that’s one my my favourite parts and contains lots of nutrients. On the chips they tasted of proper chip shop chips. There is a unique taste to them that shops in my area can’t achieve. Some of the chips should be crispy. Other large pieces soft and mushy inside. The only other time I’ve had better chips is at a shop in Upton Park almost 7 years ago. That might still be better but this is closer to wins out. On the saveloy I was told this was okay. The place also does fried chicken which look delicious and normal large sausages which I must try next time. In all I think I’ve found my new fish and chip shop. A place that is well run, has excellent quality skin on fish, does decent chips that remind me of my childhood and has super hygiene.
Still as delicious as ever.... I used to come here all the time during my term studying abroad and living in Ponders End. 30 years later I finally made it back for a visit; and although Mary is no longer working - the staff and food are as excellent as I remember. So happy I came back for both a visit and their excellent food. Will definitely return again on my next visit to London. Thanks for the great conversation and the delicious chips!!!

Wow what a fish and chips this is what you call a traditional fish and chips. But the taste was something on a next level let me start off with the fish there was no nasty oil smell or burnt marks it smelt and taste amazing. Clear sign they change their oil regularly and the smell was groundnut oil the most expensive on the market and I work in catering you rarely see any shop use this oil. The chips were white as can be the taste was even better I mean what can I say job well done keep doing what your doing you really reign supreme!!!!
